Pre-Moving Donation Tips: Thrift Stores

Pre-Moving Donation Tips: Thrift Stores

in Featured, Local Moves, Long Distance Moves, Moving & Storage

As you prepare for your upcoming move, you will likely come across items you either want to get rid of or no longer need. Purging should be complete before your movers and packers arrive. The options you have when purging items include selling them yourself (i.e., garage sale, online ads, etc.), bringing them to a consignment shop, throwing them away, or donating them to a thrift store. Donating them can offer tax benefits and provide a quick, easy way to get rid of them. However, not all items are ideal for thrift stores. Let’s take a closer look:

ITEMS THRIFT STORES WELCOME

Most items that are in good condition and operate properly are welcomed by thrift stores. This includes, but is not limited to, gently used clothing (except socks, underwear, bras, and bathing suits), furniture, home décor, tools, toys, books, school supplies, games, linens, purses, sporting goods, belts, hats, ties, luggage, small appliances, artwork, pots and pans, electronics, shoes, coats, and more. While thrift stores will often refrain from accepting used socks, underwear, bras, and bathing suits, they definitely welcome these items if they are new with the tag. So, if you have any items that still have the tag on them that you do not plan to wear, then donating them to a thrift store is an option.

ITEMS BETTER SUITED FOR THE TRASH

When evaluating items, a good rule of thumb is that if you would throw it away, then the thrift store will do the same. Items that are better suited for the trash include broken items, chipped dishes, stained/damaged furniture, and clothes that are ripped, worn, or stained.  Many thrift stores will also refuse mattresses, automotive batteries, tires, weapons, large appliances, and chemicals.
