IS IT RARE OR VALUABLE?

Rare or valuable items should be appraised before you determine what to do with them. Once you receive your appraisal, you may decide to sell, auction, or keep the item(s). If you don’t want to hire an appraiser, then you can also look the item up on the internet to help gauge its value.  One thing is for certain, you don’t want to be one of those people who sells an item cheap at a garage sale only to find out later that it has some value and the buyer was able to cash in on it at your expense.

IS IT AN HEIRLOOM?

If the furniture is an heirloom or antique, then you definitely want to consider keeping it. If you are concerned that you will not have a place to put it in your new home or you simply do not want to move it, then you can consider gifting it to relatives to ensure it stays in the family. These items can hold sentimental value and once gone, they cannot be replaced.

If you have school aged children, it is a good idea to explore schooling options before committing to moving to a new area, especially out of state. Some families choose public schools while others prefer private options. You want to make sure that the options available fit your family and educational objectives of your children.
