Adjusting Your Senior Citizen Parents to Their New Home
We are continuing our series of articles covering some strategies to help your senior parents with their upcoming move. Our previous articles covered the importance of helping them declutter, organize and secure important documents, develop a timeline for the move, and prepare for the full service movers and packers to arrive. Today, we will explore some ways you can help them adjust to their new home.
Help Them Unpack
The first order of business is to begin unpacking their belongings and putting them away. Start by setting up furniture in the bedroom and family room. This will give them a comfortable place to sit and rest and begin to get accustomed to their new surroundings. Next, unpack the essentials, including pots, pans, dishes, silverware, towels, bathroom items, and anything else that your parents are accustomed to using or accessing on a daily basis.
Create a Calming Environment
You can help your parents adjust to their new home by creating a calm and relaxing environment. This may include adding personal touches like photos and knick-knacks. You may also want to consider playing calming music or diffusing essential oils to help them relax. Once the kitchen is ready for use, consider preparing a hot, home-cooked meal to help them feel more settled.
Our next article will cover more tips on how to help your senior parents adjust to their new home.
